Program on Access to Justice and Inclusive Societies
Goal 16 of the SDGs aim to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels. Access is critical as the formal systems of the law are unfamiliar to a vast majority of people. While Legal Aid institutions predominantly focus on criminal issues a growing body of literature shows that a majority of people’s legal problems are civil, rather than criminal problems. We realise the need therefore to conceptualise Access to Justice in terms of an inclusive and development prism extending to the following key areas:
Digital Rights Privacy and Data Protection
As society digitizes, the protection of personal data and the right to online privacy have become fundamental human rights. The Centre focuses on educating citizens and institutions on the legal frameworks governing digital footprints, ensuring that technological advancement does not come at the cost of surveillance or data exploitation. We work to advocate for robust enforcement of data protection laws to safeguard the digital identity of every Nigerian.
Access to information and Legal Assistance
The gap between the law and the layman is often bridged by information. This initiative focuses on demystifying legal processes and providing marginalized communities with the tools to navigate the justice system. By simplifying complex legal procedures and facilitating access to pro bono legal aid, we empower individuals to claim their rights and seek redress in both civil and administrative forums.
Consumer Rights
Economic inclusion requires a marketplace where the rights of the consumer are respected and protected. Our work in this area focuses on strengthening the mechanisms for dispute resolution between service providers and consumers. We aim to ensure that individuals have the legal backing to challenge unfair trade practices, substandard products, and corporate negligence, fostering a culture of accountability.
Land Use, Climate and Environmental Rights
Environmental stability is a prerequisite for justice. This pillar addresses the intersection of property rights, sustainable land management, and environmental protection. The Centre advocates for the rights of communities affected by climate change and industrial degradation, ensuring they have a seat at the table in land-use decisions and access to legal remedies for environmental harm.
