“Detection by deception is a form of police procedure to be directed and used sparingly and with circumspection, but as method it is as old as the constable in plain clothes and, regrettable though the fact may be, the day has not yet come when it would be safe to say that the law and order could always be enforced and the public safety protected without occasional resort to it.”
Corruption has rightly been blamed for the underdevelopment of Nigeria, as many resources earmarked for developmental works are usually fleeced away through various acts of corruption. In this wise, governments at various times have developed different methods of fighting the menace.
Recently, the British government agreed to release to the Federal Government, proceeds from several acts of corruption by Mr James Ibori a former governor of Delta state. As part of the conditions for release, the loot was tied to some developmental and infrastructural projects of the federal government.
The need for the speedy dispensation of justice in criminal cases cannot be overemphasized. When those criminal cases are corruption cases, there is a greater need for a speedy trial and pronouncement of the judgment of the court.
