Juritrust Centre

In its quest to enhance the implementation of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2011 through capacity building the Juritrust Centre, in partnership with various stakeholders, held on 26 May 2021 an inaugural meeting for the standardization and harmonization of ACJA training manuals and tools.

In attendance at the meeting were representatives of organizations whose previous works have contributed to the ACJA training manuals and tools. These include: Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), Partners West Africa Nigeria (PWAN), Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Centre for Socio Legal Studies (CSLS), British Council – Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) Programme, CLEEN Foundation and International Federation of Women Lawyers Nigeria (FIDA).

During this activity which took place on the 26th of May, 2021, participants devised a work plan for developing updated, comprehensive and handy training manuals on the ACJA for the training of prosecutors, lawyers, magistrates and judges.  This is for the purpose of providing common understanding of the content of the manual.

At the end of the meeting, diverse inputs from the participants led to the following conclusions and recommendations –

  • The content of any ACJA training manual/workbook should include basic material on  the requirements for arrest procedures, detention time limits, probation and non custodial sentencing, sentencing and sentencing guidelines, bail applications, adjournment, issuance of legal advice, transfer of judges, compensation of victims and witness protection.
  • In the preparation of the material consideration should be given to adaptability for virtual learning

This project is sponsored by the MacArthur Foundation and is being implemented by the Juritrust Centre for Socio-Legal Research and Documentation in collaboration with the above mentioned partners.
